Further comments
Jérémie Schiettecatte (CNRS, UMR 8167 Orient & Méditerranée, Paris) provided a dataset relevant to the Yemeni area. It includes 791 entries, each being an archaeological site of Yemen described by 47 fields pertaining to the location, the chronology, the archaeological remains, the structures attested by epigraphical material, the bibliography, and the intellectual property for data issued from unpublished surveys. These data were collected from 2002 to 2006 for the needs of a PhD devoted to the evolution of the settlement pattern and the urbanization process in Pre-Islamic Yemen (12th cent. BC – 6th cent. AD). Since then, the database was sporadically implemented. The database gathered the sites presented in the published works produced by archaeological missions active in Yemen from the early 20th century down to the first decade of the 2000’s. Besides, it makes an inventory of unpublished material recognized by French archaeological surveys carried out in the former kingdom of Qatabân, in the Wâdî Markha, in the Jawf, in the Ramlat as-Sab’atayn and in Eastern Hadramawt from 1986 to 2008. If the aim of this database was to be as exhaustive as possible for the period in question, it also includes in a more sporadic way Prehistoric and Islamic archaeological sites.
